On Thursday, Oct. 19, Mayor Joe Quimby mounted the podium to address his new budget plan and changes for the city of Springfield. He begins by stating that he is proposing a freeze on property taxes. He continues to share the need for volunteers to participate in park recreational cleaning. He announces the increased rental fee for college students, from $0 to $50. When pressed about his reasoning, he states the increase would not directly impact the people of Springfield because many of the university student parents live outside of Springfield. The changes include increases in pay for the working class, a $500,000 lump sum amount to be paid to the public safety department, decrease in property tax costs for homeowners and, shared responsibility for Springfield University students and proposed volunteer initiatives to clean the local park.

Quimby’s family forward approach to the budget is created to prioritize the needs of families, promote economic development and the safety of Springfield. He proposes that residents should learn to live “within their means” to ensure gradual progress. The property freeze is designed to be an incentive for workers to relocate to the city and add to city revenue. Increase funding for public safety for $500,000. He is holding to his initial campaign.

Concerns about the new university student rental fee, he ensures the general public that the minimal change will have no impact on Springfield residents because the parents of most of the students don’t live in Springfield.

“Cops will out on the streets, engaging with neighbors and ensuring less scum bags are on the streets.”- Joe Quimby, mayor of Springfield

Hire more cops! The budget increase for public safety is designed to keep Springfield safe. “Cops will be out on the streets, engaging with neighbors.

“You’re asking the students to pay more in rent,” asked a Minnesota reporter, “and volunteer at the park?” To this the mayor Quimby responded that the suggestion for students to participate in park cleaning is completely optional. It is a volunteer role.

Quimby is not taking a salary for this term. He proposes the income can now go back into driving revenue for the city of Springfield. With the new budget in place, sales tax will gross for much of the city’s income. The people will have more financial freedom because the 8% that once went to property taxes would now be available to invest into their businesses and personal luxuries of choice.

He predicts that revenue will grow over time and the city will grow due to the knowledge of the freeze on property taxes. With the new budget, the nearly $4.7 million dollars that would have come from property taxes will no longer be accounted for city revenue. This is the intention of this new mention. More money in the pockets of citizens and less violence on the streets of Springfield.

His slogan, “Make Springfield Safe Again.”
